2020-12-11 What Does It Mean To Wait On The Lord? (Ps.27:14)
Psa 27:14 Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psalm 27 is a prayer to God for help.
David's theme is a confident trust in the Lord where we are exhorted to wait on Him.
He expresses authentic faith and courageous trust in God.
David helps illustrate the meaning of waiting on the Lord throughout this Psalm.

1. We can wait on the Lord by trusting in Him (Ps.27:1-3).
Psa 27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
Psa 27:2 When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell.
Psa 27:3 Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident.

David expressed great confidence in the Lord, who was his light, stronghold, and salvation,

2. We can wait on the Lord by seeking Him (Ps.27:4-6).
Psa 27:4 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.
David conveyed his trust in the Lord by longing to be with Him. He wanted to be in God's dwelling place, so he would be safe and secure.

3. We can wait on the Lord through prayer (Ps.27:7-14).
In his prayer David shows an eager expectation of deliverance.
He prayed for wisdom and direction (v.11) and protection (v.12).
Waiting on the Lord involves a confident expectation of a positive result.

This expectation is based on knowledge of and trust in God.
Those who do not know the Lord will not wait on Him
We must be confident of who God is and what He is capable of doing.
Those who wait on the Lord do not lose heart in their prayer (1Jn.5:14).
1Jn 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

4. We can wait on the Lord to have our strength renewed (Is.40:31).
Isa 40:31 But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.
This brings serenity and stability to our lives as we wait and trust in Him.

5. We can wait on the Lord which brings God's blessings (Is.64:4).
Isa 64:4 For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.

6. We can wait on the Lord as a testimony to others who will see our faith. (Ps.40:1-3).
Psa 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.
Psa 40:2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.
Psa 40:3 He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the LORD.

As we wait on the Lord it may result in others putting their trust in the Lord

So by waiting on the Lord we learn to trust Him, wait on Him, pray to Him, be renewed by Him, be blessed by Him, and have a testimony of Him toward others.
Waiting on the Lord is the Christian's expected daily life (1Co.1:7).
1Co 1:7 so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
