2021-04-13 How Are Two Better Than One? (Ec.4:9)
Ecc 4:9 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.
Ecc 4:10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.
Ecc 4:11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?

When Solomon pursued wisdom, he learned things in life are more enduring.
Solomon reflects on the importance of companionship and the benefits of working together.
Solomon agrees with God that “It is not good that man should be alone” (Ge.2:18).

In a work setting, since a pair of laborers can accomplish more than a person working alone, clearly two are better than one.
When working through difficult jobs four hands gives double the strength of two hands.
Two people bring a more varied skill set to the table. Often the different strengths complement each other.

Solomon expands the two is better than one idea by pointing to the possibility of one failing (v.10).
If one fails or falls, a second person can help him get back up.
This maxim has great emotional and spiritual implications.
If we stumble in our spiritual walk or we are down emotionally, it is vital to have a friend or mentor who can come alongside to restore wholeness.
Paul spoke of a believer who is overcome by some sin, that we come along to help that person get back on the right path (Ga.6:1).
When we share each other's burdens in this way we obey the law of Christ (Ga.6:2).

If you have ever spent time in freezing elements, you know that two are better than one.
If you stay close to another person, you will keep each other warm. But alone you feel the full force of the cold.
One person, say traveling alone is more vulnerable to attack, than two or three traveling together (v.12).

We need Christian friends for emotional, practical, and spiritual support through life’s hardships.
If we nurture relationships with other believers, we will always have someone to help us stay on track and lift us back up when we fall.
God’s people are not meant to live in isolation but walk this road together (He.10:25; Ac.2:44).
The early church worshipped together at the temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared meals with great generosity (Ac.2:46).

The body of Christ is stronger and more protected as we care for one another through adversity and celebrate life’s victories together.
As we work together and walk together in the strength of unity, we accomplish more for God’s kingdom (Jn.13:35).
So, Solomon spoke of two are better than one for several reasons.
We can protect and guard against danger. We can bring comfort when in need. We can help in time of trouble.
If you do not have such a friend, pray God will bring someone along to provide the strength-giving support of a friend.
If you have such a friend, thank God for that friendship.
